ULA社,Vulcanロケットの主エンジンにBlue Origin社のBE-4を選定

9/11のWorld Satellite Businessの場で、Blue Origin社は、BE-4は200秒超を含む数百秒の燃焼試験実績を重ねている、と説明していた。

選定に敗れたAerojet Rocketdyne社は、AR1エンジンについて、最近は「AR1シングルエンジンで打ち上げられる中型ロケットは新たな主力ロケットにぴったりである」という言い方をしていた。

Citing threats to U.S. space capabilities, senior U.S. defense officials have emphasized a need to transition to smaller spacecraft that can be developed and launched more quickly. A medium-class launch vehicle powered by a single AR1 is ideally suited to become a new workhorse rocket for the nation.

なお、AR1開発に関わるOTAについても、従来「$804Mの開発費の2/3を政府が負担する」となっていたものを、6月に「$353.8Mの開発費の5/6を政府が負担する」と変更になり、スコープも、プロトタイプエンジン1基の設計・製造のみに限定されていた。
